The young girl, faced with the threat of getting hypothermia, was able to survive thanks to her canine friend, who thought quickly. The disappearance of Vika.
Vika Z is a ten-year-old girl who lives in Sakhalin, a Russian island. She enjoys the company of stray dogs.
She was heading home after a school day when the challenging weather disoriented her. The snowfall was so heavy that it was two feet high, and the drifts blocked the first floors of buildings. The weather eventually became so bad that one could barely see what was ahead.
Vika disappeared for 18 hours. At that time, the temperatures were -11 degrees Celsius. Her family thought she might not make it through the cold night. Together with the help of neighbors, Vika’s family braved the harsh weather to bring their daughter back home.
Vika’s search and rescue.
Vika’s family went through the streets looking and calling her while questioning other people about her whereabouts. A witness came forward and stated that she saw her in the company of a stray dog near one of the apartments in the area.
The rescue team used that information to trace Vika, and they went to her rescue about half a mile from her family home. She was cuddled with the dog under a balcony on a mattress provided by pet owners in a bid to keep warm. Even though they were outside, they were shielded from the snow.
The dog vanished from sight once Vika was safe. The rescue mission was a success, but she still needed medical care since she suffered a minor frostbite.
