Augie’s Record Milestone
Golden retrievers live ten to twelve years, making celebrating a 20th birthday a record milestone. Augie is believed to be the oldest golden retriever, having lived to celebrate her 20th birthday.
Augie’s story became public after the GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue shared it on Facebook. Although there have been accounts of golden retrievers celebrating their 17th, 18th, and 19th birthdays, according to the rescue home, Augie’s case is the first of a golden celebrating the 20th.
Adoption Journey, Celebration and Companions
Augie (official name August) was born on April 24, 2000. Before being finally adopted by her current owners, she had been rehomed twice. Both rehomes were due to circumstances beyond her control.
Fortunately, she found a new home in Tennessee after being adopted by Jennifer and Steve, who were actively involved in the activities of a local rescue organization for golden retrievers. At the time of her adoption, Augie was 14 years old. The couple believed adopting her was the right thing, as many people would have overlooked her due to her age.
After her adoption, Augie had the opportunity to visit different places around the world. She still enjoys playing fetch in the couple’s pool. Despite being 20, Jennifer reports that Augie enjoys taking walks in the garden and other than getting shaky when getting up, she is surprisingly healthy.
Augie celebrated her 20th birthday with a pet-friendly carrot cake. Her siblings Bruce, Belle, and Sherman were by her side as she marked the record-holding birthday.

After her birthday was shared on Facebook, Augie attracted the attention of many, as evidenced by over 24,000 shares. In addition, heartfelt comments were left under the post wishing her a happy birthday.
